Tip One: Avoid Surges and Shortages Protect your computers, telephone system, and other electronics from power surges and brownouts. Invest in a good quality UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) with a surge protector to power and protect critical computers or network equipment. Computers, routers, cable or DSL modems, and other equipment can be easily damaged. A fried hard drive or computer can mean a critical loss of data. Plus, recovering data, reloading software on a new hard drive, or replacing a computer can be time consuming (time and data cost money). Read more... Tip Two: Keep Viruses at Bay More than 94,000 viruses exist today with new ones and variations of old ones being created daily. To fully protect yourself and your business, be sure to install anti virus software on every computer hooked up to the Internet. And, be sure your virus subscription is up to date. Last, be sure the updater is working properly by checking the date on the latest virus definition file. Set the anti virus software to scan incoming and outgoing email messages. Read more... Tip Three: Backup Your Computer Data Assess the risk of data loss to your business (or even to your home computer). At a bare minimum, establish an hourly rate you feel your time is worth and multiply it by 5 to 25 (the minimum number of hours it can take you to recover from an incident). That does not include any data that is lost or needs to be recreated. Experts recommend that you backup your data to CDs or DVDs, verify the data can be restored, and store the copies offsite. Home users, consider making backups and storing copies of important data in your safe deposit box. The more often your data changes, or, the more data you have, the more critical it is to back up data. Read more... Tip Four: Review Your Insurance Coverage Annually Avoid the impulse to automatically renew your business, health, home, auto, or other insurance. Your insurance agent can provide a risk assessment, review, and provide helpful suggestions on how you might save money. Take a close look at deductibles to see if your deductibles can be raised to lower premiums. Often, a modest increase in deductibles can result in sizable savings. Ask your agent if there are any ways they can help you save money while minimizing the risk. Sometimes, it makes sense to get a "second opinion" from another agent to make sure you're getting the best deal. Tip Five: Free Energy Audit Ask your utility company for a free energy audit and off-peak usage discount. The free energy audit provides tips to conserve energy and to help reduce your monthly bills. For the discount, request a copy of your energy consumption. If your consumption is greatest during the utility's low-usage point, you may be able to get a few cents per kilowatt-hour discount.
