Get a Kit, Make a Plan, Be Informed

Get An Emergency Kit
Purchase emergency supply kits to allow you and your family to survive for at least 3 days in the event any emergency happens. You may only have moments to react to an emergency - so be sure your kit can be grabbed quickly. Don't forget about food and water for your pet(s). These kits should have a minimum of three days of non-perishable food and water (1 gallon per person per day). In addition, be sure your kit incluldes a familiy first aid kit, two flashlights (and spare batteries), a crank or solar powered radio, solar blankets, a whistle with lanyard, and dust masks for each person in your family. You'll find varying recommendations on the kits - think what you'll need and be sure you have everything important for those first 72 hours.

During an emergency, the focus is on saving lives - not taking care of people who are capable of taking care of themselves. Authorities state that they expect families to be able to be self-sufficient for a minimum of 72 hours after an emergency. Don't count on anyone to bring you food and water during those critical hours after a disaster. Take care of yourself and your family.

Get Ready to Grab and Go
You'll need to be able to grab important items quickly. Experts recommend that you always put your wallet, glasses, car keys, cell phones and other important items in the same place so you don't have to waste time looking for things in an emergency. Keep prescription medications in a place that is safe from children and pets yet accessible quickly in case of an emergency. The goal is to not have to look for things when you need to take action. Remember, your safety and the safety of others is the primary goal. Don't go back into a hazardous area if you've forgotten something. Get out, get safe.

Make a Plan
Take time now to plan what you and your family will do in an emergency. Your plan should include where you'll meet, how you'll communicate and what you'll do in the event you are separated due to an emergency. Cell phone channels may become inoperative or jammed with traffic and you may not have the ability to use cell phones. Be sure your plan includes alternate ways to communicate. What will you do with your pets in case shelters do not accept pets? What about elderly or special needs familiy members? Again, planning in advance will help you think through the possibilities and be as prepared as possible.

Scaling Your Disaster Plan to Your Potential Business Risk
If you own your own business, be sure you create a plan so you can take care of people first and then the business. There have been many times we've closed the offices to make sure our employees are safe and able to get home. It's part of our plan - people first, then we think about the business.

One way to think about being prepared in terms of your business or work is to create the business disaster plan based on the risk. We'll explain. In our business, we get so many orders each day that even a few minutes of interruption in our online store or business costs us sales. Once everyone is safe, we move to step two. Step two includes emergency generators, move the operations quickly to an offsite location or do the electronic part of the business from our other offices or homes.

Employees are able to log in to the network from another office or their homes. We've had numerous occasions where storms close the offices and we're able to continue working from a safe place using our computers.
