Find Hidden Windfalls of Money:

Tips For Saving Time and Money
On Technology and Computers

Backup Your Computer Data
Assess the risk of data loss to your business (or even to your home computer). At a bare minimum, establish an hourly rate you feel your time is worth and multiply it by 5 to 25 (the minimum number of hours it can take you to recover fron an incident. That does not include any data that is lost or must be recreated.

Experts recommend you not only backup your data but you verify that the data can be restored. Best bet is to store your data offsite. Home users, consider making backups and storing copies of important data in your safe deposit box. Expert's recommendation: back up critical data to CD or DVDs and store those copies offsite. The more often your data changes, or, the more data you have, the more critical it is to back up data.

One customer told us they have over 700 digital pictures of family, travel, and people they've captured over the past few years - and they don't have a copy of any of the pictures they downloaded from their camera. In seconds their photos and everything else on their computer could disappear. Turn an invitation to disaster into insurance against hard disk problems by backing up all of your data on a regular basis.

It's easy to figure out how important it is to backup your data. Ask yourself how long it would take you to redo or reconstruct the information? If it's more than one hour, then spend the time to back up your data.

Keep Viruses at Bay

One of the favorite tricks of the virus makers is to make messages look like the are coming from friends, family or associates who you just "know" would never send you email with a virus in it... those are the ones to scan most carefully. If you are not sure about a message with an attachment, ask the sender if they sent you the message.

Avoid Surges and Shortages
Protect your computers, telephone system, and other electronics from power surges and brownouts. Invest in a good quality UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) to power critical computers or network equipment. Computers, routers, cable or DSL modems, and other equipment can be easily damaged. A fried hard drive or computer can mean a critical loss of data. Plus, recovering data, reloading software on a new hard drive, or replacing a computer can be time consuming. When purchasing a UPS, choose one with the capability to power the equipment plugged in for at least 30 minutes - enough time to save work, close down programs, and turn off the computer. Be sure your surge strips are good quality. Last, be sure to check your UPS on a monthly basis. Batteries in UPS power supplies have a lifespan as well
